Unlike the other circumscriptions, it does not cover a vast territory, but is focused on central service and academic structures located in Rome. Its aim is twofold: to guarantee the unity of the Congregation around the successor of Don Bosco and to prepare the Salesians of tomorrow who, upon returning to their Provinces of origin, will be able to serve the young with competence and fidelity to the original charisma.
This area serves as a point of reference for the entire Congregation, ensuring worldwide coordination of the charisma and high-level intellectual and spiritual formation.

Structure and composition
As indicated by the name, the area is composed of two fundamental nuclei:
– Salesian Central Headquarters (RMG – Rome Generalate): it comprises the Central Headquarters (Generalate House) and the offices that assist the Rector Major and his Council in the government and animation of the Salesian mission on the five continents.
– Pontifical Salesian University (UPS): it is the academic institution of the Congregation that offers courses of study in various faculties (Theology, Education Sciences, Philosophy, Christian and Classical Letters, Sciences of Social Communication and Canon Law).

Presence and mission
The Central Headquarters is not a provincial house in the territorial sense, but a community with a functional configuration: its service extends to all the Salesian Provinces and Vice-Provinces. It is composed of confreres coming from different Regions of the world, called to collaborate in the various Dicasteries (Formation, Youth Ministry, Social Communication, Missions, Economy, etc.) and in the coordinating bodies of the Congregation.

In recent years, in order to respond to specific organisational and operational needs, further houses directly linked to the Central Headquarters have been added. These communities too depend immediately on the Rector Major, configuring themselves as realities functional to the governance and universal mission of the Congregation.

The “Pontifical Salesian University” (UPS) Visitory is a Special Visitory of the Salesian Society of Saint John Bosco, equivalent to a Province, established to guarantee proper governance and unitary coordination to the Salesian community that operates at the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome, and is configured as a special area, directly dependent on the Rector Major.

It is a non-territorial Salesian juridical circumscription, established to safeguard and develop the academic and formative identity of the University as an international centre at the service of the Congregation and the Church.

According to Salesian institutional tradition, Visitatories are circumscriptions which, owing to particular characteristics (size, purpose, juridical configuration), are not yet or are not structured as Provinces, but enjoy a certain autonomy and are entrusted to a Superior with the title of Superior of a Visitatory.

Unlike the territorial Provinces – organized on a geographical basis (national or interregional) and responsible for educational, pastoral and social works in a given territory – the UPS Visitatory has a functional configuration. Its identity is closely linked to the cultural and academic mission of the Congregation, it has an international character, with confreres coming from different Provinces throughout the world, and it performs a specific service to the Congregation and to the Church in the field of theological, philosophical and pedagogical formation and of scientific research in the educational and pastoral field.

It is open not only to Salesians from all over the world, but also to other priests, religious and lay people who wish to pursue their baccalaureate, licentiate and doctoral studies offered by the various faculties.

Despite its limited geographical dimension, this area counts more than 15 houses with the presence of more than 350 Salesians.

To access the documents of the RMG – UPS Area, click HERE .

Salesian Regions The RMG – UPS Area constitutes a particular reality within the Salesian geography.
