Managing these resources with responsibility, transparency and coherence with Gospel values is the task of the Economy Sector of the Salesian Congregation. It is not a purely technical office, but a service that has a precise moral and missionary value.

Who leads it
The Sector is entrusted to the Councillor General for the Economy, elected by the General Chapter and a member of the General Council. This placement within the central government of the Congregation reflects a precise choice: economic decisions are not separate from pastoral and missionary ones, but form an integral part of them. Alongside the Councillor operates an office with specialised staff, which supports the work of analysis, supervision and guidance.

What the Sector does
The Economy Sector carries out its activity on several levels.
The first concerns thesupervision of financial managementof the Congregation at central level and support for the provinces around the world. Every Salesian province has its own administration, but the Sector offers guidelines, tools and common criteria to ensure that resources are managed in an orderly, transparent way and in accordance with both ecclesiastical and civil norms in the various countries.
The second level concerns theformation of economersprovincial and local. Administering the goods of a religious community requires specific skills, but also a particular attitude: the awareness that those goods do not belong to anyone personally, but are instruments at the service of the mission. The Sector promotes meetings, formation programmes and resources to help those who carry out this role to do so with competence and a spirit of service.
The third level is that of thereflection and orientation. The Sector contributes to drawing up the Congregation’s economic guidelines, taking into account the directions of the Holy See, international regulations and the challenges facing Salesian works in different contexts. Topics such as the sustainability of the works, the management of real estate assets and the relationship between available resources and missionary priorities are the object of study and constant dialogue with the provinces.

Economy and mission
In the Salesian tradition, material goods have always had a precise meaning: they are means, not ends. Don Bosco built great works starting from little, trusting in Providence while working with great concreteness and practical sense. This style continues to inspire the way the Congregation deals with economic matters.
The Economy Sector works so that the available resources are used well: without waste, without opacity, with particular attention to the works that serve the poorest young people. Sound and transparent management is not only a matter of good administration, but is also a sign of credibility for a religious congregation that works in the name of the Gospel.

In this sense, the work of the Economy Sector is, in its own way, part of the mission: ensuring that resources are available, that they are well managed and that they continue to serve the purpose for which they were entrusted to the Congregation.

To access the documents of the Economy Sector, click HERE .

Salesian Sectors The Economy Sector in the Salesian Congregation A religious congregation present in more than a hundred countries, with thousands of educational works, schools, youth centres, missions and reception structures, needs resources in order to function.
