In 1875, barely sixteen years after the founding of the Congregation, he sent the first group of missionaries to Argentina. From that moment, the mission ad gentes has become one of the most characteristic expressions of the Salesian vocation. The Missions Sector is the body that, at the central level, animates and coordinates this dimension of the life of the Congregation.

Who leads it
The Sector is entrusted to the Councillor General for the Missions, elected by the General Chapter and a member of the General Council. This placement in the central government of the Congregation reflects the weight that the missionary dimension has in Salesian identity. The Councillor works with a dedicated team and maintains constant relations with the provinces and Salesian missions present in the most remote areas of the world.

What the Sector does
The Missions Sector operates on several fronts, with work that combines animation, coordination and concrete support.
The first area concerns the missionary animationwithin the Congregation. Not all Salesian provinces are located in mission territories, but all are called to cultivate a missionary outlook. The Sector promotes this awareness through formation resources, meetings and initiatives that help Salesians and their collaborators feel part of a mission that goes beyond the borders of their own province or country.
The second area is thecoordination of the missions. The Congregation is present in many areas of the world where the Church is young or where populations live in conditions of great fragility: indigenous communities in Latin America, rural populations in Africa, minorities in Asia. The Sector follows these realities, supports the missionaries working there and encourages the exchange of experiences among the different missions.
The third area concerns the dispatch of missionaries. Every year, Salesians from different provinces make themselves available to be sent on mission. The Sector oversees this process: from the selection and preparation of candidates to their placement in the destination communities, and through the accompaniment provided during the years of missionary service.

Mission and human promotion
In mission areas, Salesian work is not limited to the proclamation of the Gospel. Schools, dispensaries, vocational training centres, agricultural development projects: the Salesian mission cares for the whole person, for his or her dignity and living conditions. The Missions Sector upholds this integral vision, in which evangelization and human promotion walk together.

In the spirit of Don Bosco
Don Bosco looked at the world with broad horizons. He wanted his sons to reach wherever there were young people to be educated and people to be accompanied. The Missions Sector carries forward this drive: not as nostalgia for a heroic past, but as a concrete and present-day response to a vocation that continues to call people willing to put themselves on the line far from home, at the service of the poorest.

To access the documents of the Missions Sector, click HERE .

Salesian Sectors The Missions Sector in the Salesian Congregation A few months before he died, Don Bosco had a dream that marked him deeply: he saw distant lands, peoples who did not know the Gospel, and he felt the desire to reach them.
