The Salesian Congregation in the world — the body that, under the guidance of the Rector Major, animates and governs the Congregation at world level.
The General Council is the body that animates and governs the Congregation at world level. Below, in a concise and functional form, is the role of each member.
Successor of Saint John Bosco. He is the superior general of the Congregation: he guarantees its charismatic unity, guides strategic choices, promotes fidelity to the Salesian charism and officially represents the Institute in the Church and in the world.
He works directly with the Rector Major and stands in for him in his absence. He has particular responsibility for the life and religious discipline of the Congregation.
They look after a specific area essential to the development of the Congregation. There are five of them.
He coordinates and guides the initial and ongoing formation of Salesians (aspirantate, novitiate, post-novitiate, practical training, specific and ongoing formation), ensuring common formation criteria worldwide.
He guides and animates Salesian educational and pastoral action worldwide: oratories, schools, vocational training centres, universities, parishes and social works, promoting the Preventive System in different cultural contexts.
He promotes the missionary spirit, coordinates the opening of new presences, accompanies missionaries ad gentes and fosters solidarity between Provinces.
He animates the Social Communication Sector: publishing, digital media, institutional identity and the culture of communication, supporting the Salesian presence in media and digital environments.
He administers the goods of the Congregation at central level and coordinates its economic management, promoting transparency, sustainability and solidarity between Provinces.
They represent specific geographical areas in the General Council. There are eight of them.
He follows the Salesian presences in Central and West Africa.
He animates and coordinates the Provinces of eastern and southern Africa.
He coordinates the North American, Central American and Caribbean area.
He accompanies the Provinces of the southern part of South America.
He coordinates the presences in the Far East and Oceania.
He follows the Provinces of India and the southern Asian subcontinent.
He accompanies the Provinces of central and northern Europe.
He follows the Provinces of southern Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
He looks after the official acts of the central government, documentation, decrees, archives and the proper conduct of canonical and institutional procedures.
