Central and West Africa Region
Salesian Regions
The Central and West Africa Region is characterised by great cultural and linguistic variety, although French is the dominant language in most of the countries of this region. This geographical area bears witness to the constant commitment of the Salesian Congregation in the service of the young, especially the most vulnerable, in contexts often marked by complex social and economic challenges.
Presence and organisation
The Region is articulated in six Provinces, which coordinate activities in the territory:
– Central Africa (AFC)
– Africa Congo Congo (ACC)
– Africa Nigeria Niger (ANN)
– West Africa North (AON)
– West Africa South (AOS)
– Equatorial Tropical Africa (ATE)
This structure allows a capillary animation, close to local realities, ensuring that the Salesian charism responds effectively to the educational and pastoral needs of every nation.
Geographical extension
Salesian action extends across no fewer than 20 countries, covering a vast portion of the continent: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea (Conakry), Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.
The strength of the mission
Today, the Region relies on the dedication of about a thousand Salesians, who work daily in more than a hundred canonically erected houses or works. The mission focuses mainly on vocational training, literacy, the care of street children and the animation of oratories.
The goal remains the one indicated by the founder: to form "good Christians and honest citizens", offering the new African generations the tools they need to become protagonists of their own future and of the development of their countries. Through schools, parishes and youth centres, the Salesians continue to be a point of reference for thousands of young people and their families.
