South America Southern Cone Region
Salesian Regions
The South America Southern Cone Region represents one of the historical areas of Salesian presence in the world, having been the first destination of the missionary expeditions dreamed of and carried out by Don Bosco. Today this Region continues to bear witness to the charism of the Saint of the young through a consolidated network of works that extend from the Amazon rainforest to the lands of Patagonia.
Organisation and Provinces
The Region is structured in eleven Provinces, which reflect the vastness and the complexity of the territory, with a presence particularly rooted in Brazil and Argentina:
– Argentina North (ARN) and Argentina South (ARS)
– Brazil: Belo Horizonte (BBH), Campo Grande (BCG), Manaus (BMA), Porto Alegre (BPA), Recife (BRE), São Paulo (BSP)
– Chile (CIL)
– Paraguay (PAR)
– Uruguay (URU)
Geographical extension
Salesian activity develops in five nations of Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. In these countries, the Congregation has succeeded in integrating itself deeply into the social fabric, becoming a key player in the processes of education and human promotion, often in close collaboration with local institutions and civil communities.
Educational and social presence
The operative strength of the Region rests on the dedication of more than a thousand Salesians, who animate and manage more than one hundred and fifty houses. These works constitute an immense formative ecosystem: from the great Salesian universities to technical schools, from frontier parishes to indigenous missions, up to the care centres for young people at risk.
The action of the Salesians in the Southern Cone focuses on the challenge of educational quality and social inclusion, seeking to offer concrete answers to the new urban poverty and to the needs of rural populations. The patrimony of experience accumulated over more than a century of presence allows the Region to be a laboratory of pedagogical innovation, ever faithful to the Preventive System and to the love for the young most in need.
