Procurator General

Organisation of the Salesian Congregation

The Procurator General
The figure of the Procurator General of the Salesian Congregation belongs to the framework of institutional relations between the Society of Saint Francis de Sales and the Holy See. He is the religious entrusted with permanently representing the Congregation before the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia, attending to the matters that require the intervention or approval of the competent authorities.

The Procurator acts on behalf of the Rector Major and of the General Council, performing a function of qualified liaison between the central governance of the Congregation and the Apostolic See. His task is not only technical and administrative, but ecclesial: to ensure that the life and mission of the Congregation develop in full communion with the Magisterium and the discipline of the Church.

His responsibilities include the presentation and monitoring of matters concerning the erection or modification of circumscriptions, the approval of normative texts, dispensations or particular requests which, according to canon law, must be submitted to the Holy See. He also follows matters relating to confreres who require formal intervention by the competent Dicasteries.

The Procurator must possess canonical competence, the capacity for discernment and a deep knowledge of the Salesian charisma. His work demands juridical precision, discretion and a sense of responsibility, since the matters handled touch significant aspects of religious life and of the governance of the Congregation.

Alongside the technical-juridical dimension, his mission involves a role of advisory counsel. He offers guidance to the Rector Major and to his collaborators concerning the procedures to be followed and the normative implications of the decisions taken. In this way he contributes to guaranteeing the canonical regularity of the acts of governance and their consistency with the universal norms of the Church.

The figure of the Procurator concretely expresses the ecclesial dimension of the Salesian vocation. The Congregation, founded by Saint John Bosco, lives and operates in the Church and for the Church. The Procurator’s service makes this communion visible, ensuring that apostolic action and the institutional journey take place in respect of the law and in fidelity to the charism.

In his discreet and often barely visible work, the Procurator contributes to the juridical stability and institutional solidity of the Congregation, creating the conditions for the educational and pastoral mission in favour of the young to be carried out with serenity and full ecclesial legitimacy.
