East and Southern Africa Region
Salesian Regions
The East and Southern Africa Region represents a vast reality of the Salesian Congregation, extending from the shores of the Indian Ocean to the southern areas of the continent. The mission in this area is deeply rooted in human promotion, offering concrete responses to the educational and social challenges of young and rapidly growing populations.
Structure and Provinces
To coordinate at best the pastoral and formative action, the Region is divided into nine circumscriptions, which comprise Provinces and Vice-Provinces:
– East Africa (AFE)
– Africa Ethiopia-Eritrea (AET)
– Africa Great Lakes (AGL)
– Southern Africa (AFM)
– Angola (ANG)
– Madagascar (MDG)
– Mozambique (MOZ)
– Tanzania (TZA)
– Zambia – Malawi – Zimbabwe (ZMB)
This organisation allows the Sons of Don Bosco to operate with efficacy, respecting the linguistic (even though the English language is dominant in these countries) and cultural specificities of the different territories.
Geographical presence
The Salesian commitment embraces 21 countries, covering an immense geographical surface that includes: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Eritrea, Eswatini (Swaziland), Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Numbers of the mission
The vitality of this Region is sustained by the daily work of a thousand Salesians, who animate and manage more than a hundred Salesian houses. In these communities, attention is given first of all to schools, vocational training centres, rural missions and youth centres.
Particular care is devoted to young people living in situations of extreme poverty or in areas affected by conflict, offering them not only education but also a safe environment in which to grow. Through the pedagogy of the Preventive System, the East Africa and Southern Africa Region continues to sow hope, building paths of development and dignity together with the local communities.
