East Asia–Oceania Region

Salesian Regions

The East Asia–Oceania Region represents one of the largest and most multicultural areas of the Salesian Congregation. Characterised by an extraordinary variety of traditions, languages and political systems, the mission in this part of the world stands out for its capacity for dialogue and for constant attention to the young in contexts of rapid technological and social development.

Organisation and Provinces
To respond to the challenges of such a heterogeneous territory, the Region is structured in twelve Provinces and Vice-Provinces, which animate the Salesian charism at the local level:
– Australia-Pacific (AUL)
– China (CIN)
– Philippines North (FIN) and Philippines South (FIS)
– Japan (GIA)
– Indonesia (INA)
– South Korea (KOR)
– Myanmar (MYM)
– Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (PGS)
– Thailand (THA)
– East Timor (TLS)
– Vietnam (VIE)

Geographical Extension
The presence of the Sons of Don Bosco touches 20 nations and territories, linking continental Asia with the islands of the Pacific: Australia, Cambodia, China, South Korea, Fiji, the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

Educational and Missionary Presence
The commitment of the Region is sustained by more than a thousand Salesians, who operate daily in more than one hundred and fifty-five houses. In many of these countries, the Salesians are in the front line in the management of technical schools of excellence, youth centres, parishes and first-rescue works for street children.
In contexts where Christians are often a minority, the Salesian mission expresses itself through the "pedagogy of presence" and the educational service, promoting the integral development of the young without distinction of creed. From the modern Asian metropolises to the remote rural communities of Oceania, the objective remains that of offering the young concrete opportunities for human and professional growth, bearing witness to the values of solidarity and of peace.
